Υπάρχουν άνθρωποι που δεν διαβάζουν βιβλία, τώρα ή παλιά. Μερικοί δεν έχουν αγγίξει δίσκο με τα ακροδάχτυλα τους. Άλλοι δεν περπάτησαν ξυπόλυτοι στο χώμα ενός βουνού, δεν σήκωσαν τα χέρια στον ουρανό να πιάσουν τους γλάρους, δεν φωτογράφισαν την αύρα του ανθρώπου τους.

Μια μικρή βόλτα μπορεί να σε κάνει μάρτυρα ανάμεσά τους. Πιθανόν να κρατάνε σακούλες των λίγων λεπτών χαράς, αλλιώς θα κοιτάνε μία ορθογώνια οθόνη. Μυρίζουν αδιάφορο καφέ που πετάχτηκε σ' ένα ποτήρι. Ή εκείνες τις κασέτες που στο τέλος της εποχής τους μοιράζονταν μαζί με εφημερίδες εξειδικευμένες στο τύλιγμα ωμού ψαριού. Προτιμώ τον πατέρα μου να ψήνει την παστή ρέγκα στην ταράτσα, κάποιο φθινοπωρινό μεσημεριανό της παιδικής μου ηλικίας.

Μερικές αναμνήσεις φτιάχνονται για διαφημίσεις του εαυτού μας. Είμαστε αυτοί που έχουν μεγάλες βιβλιοθήκες, τεράστιες εκτάσεις ψηφιακών τραγουδιών και άλλων τις εμπειρίες. Σε ένα σύμπαν που γίνεται όλο και περισσότερο μια βρεγμένη πετσέτα με τον ιδρώτα πολυεθνικής σαβούρας, οι σελίδες μυρίζουν μούχλα κι ας είναι ηλεκτρονικές.

There are people who do not read books, now or back then. Some have not touched a disc with their fingertips. Others did not walk barefoot on the soil of a mountain, did not raise their hands to the sky to catch the seagulls, did not photograph the aura of their man.

A short walk can make you a witness among them. They may be holding bags of a few minutes of joy, otherwise they will be looking at a rectangular screen. They smell of indifferent coffee thrown in a glass. Or those tapes that at the end of their era were shared with newspapers specializing in raw fish wrapping. I prefer my father to bake the salted herring on the roof, some autumn afternoon of my childhood.

Some memories are made for advertisements of ourselves. We are the ones who have large libraries, huge areas of digital songs and other experiences. In a world that is increasingly becoming a wet towel with the sweat of multinational savor, the pages smell of mold even if they are electronic.
